Is it possible to trek by your own to EBC?
It is of course possible to trek all the way to Everest base camp without a guide or porter but the main thing is that you have to be prepared mentally and physically whether with a group or by yourself. Once you decide that trekking by yourself then you better get all terms and conditions about the trekking route and be safe.
However trekking by your own means you can save some money, no doubt but be assured first that your flight ticket to Lukla & Back, tea house accommodation, permits local entrance fees all you have to manage by yourself on time because in high trekking season there are limit rooms for trekkers and without a guide, it would be quite difficult to get a room as they know all the owner of each settlement than easily can get rooms.
Useful guidelines for Everest base camp trekking:
- Take enough cash because there are no ATM machine except Namche, even ATM Machine at Namche will not working most of the time – 4,000 Nepali rupee($40 US) required each trekkers for their meal, lodge and other expenses,
- You should keep your same pace(speed) while you are walking up to Everest Base camp, otherwise you may get mountain sickness easily,
- Do’t try to miscalculate your strength as it is very important to balance your energy and time.
- There will be many places to rest wherever you fell to stop , just stop, breathe deeply and drink some water,
- Take some energy bar in your day bag, like that you can have it whenever you want eat , gives you very quick energy,
- It is highly recommended you to drink at least 3 to 4 ltr of water a day including few cups of tea, which will makes your hydrate body while you are walking
- Take metal water bottle if possible if not thick plastic bottle to refill the water as the bottle water is expensive.
- Take a light back pack which are suggested by your tour operator or guide,
- Your personal important things such as Passport, money back, chrager, tab, laptop, camera, Gopro must be taken in your small day back for the safety,
- If you feel some abnormal activities on your body than recommended to consult with your export guide than take medicine after discussion.
- Everest base camp itself is an adventure hiking destination therefore suggested to have a expertise guide and porter, they will help you any condition while you are trek, it’s your safety.
- Try not to eat Meat item food, as they keep meat for long time without using freeze, only at Namche, Lukla and Phakding where you can try meat item food as they keep in freeze which is relatively safe to eat than other place of Everest trek
- Bargain is not really a system in the mountain so, either you are buying souvenir or foods they are generally fixed price,
- You better to ask if you are taking picture of locals,
- Do not light the gas inside your room as they have mostly wooden made rooms which is not safe lighting the fire inside,
- In busy season, there will be so many electrical devices to charge at same big charging so, take care by yourself because when there is crowded it may be lost,
- Whatever you buy or eat from tea house or from store if there is no price on than you better to ask to be sure about actual price.
