A Guide to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Trek

Everest region trekking is located in the far eastern part of Nepal and it is one of the most Popular Trekking routes in Nepal. Everest is the top one highest mountain in the world this is why thousands of trekkers used to visits Nepal. A Guide to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Trek helps a lot for Everest trekkers who are planning their holiday for the coming days.

Everest is also known as a Sagarmatha Which means touching your head to the Sky. Everest Trekking is more than you look at Spectacular Mountains in front, it is also about small impediments, you face.

While you are going up and downhill during the trek, that will keep your wonderful going. Everest trek starts from Kathmandu in a small plane which is a very short flight but pleasant flying through the high range mountains and a short airstrip once you reach Lukla, it is already standing at 2860 meters.

Everest base camp and Gokyo trek usually takes 16 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu if you have quite a good pace and following the normal itinerary.

It is one of the best and popular trekking trails in the Everest region that shows you so many spectacular mountain views, the world’s biggest Glacier (Ngozumpa glacier), and the Khumbu glacier.

There are few alternative trekking routes to go to Everest base camp, Kalapather, and Gokyo over the Chola pass. If you are simply fit you can make Everest base camp easily but you should follow the instruction about the region and your guide who have practically more experience.

While you are descending and ascending in the Khumbu region you can easily explore Sherpa, Rai, and Tamang’s unique culture and pristine lifestyle as well as their warm hospitality.

Trekking to Everest base camp and Gokyo is a strenuous task and rewarding activity. The trail climbs along the Dudh Koshi river most of the time especially till Namche from Lukla. Namche and Lukla are the major mountain settlements of the Everest Khumbu region, it is where they supply all goods towards the upper part of the Everest region.

The Namche Bazaar is elevated at 3,450 m from sea level but there are almost all facilities for trekkers and locals such as banks, Bakery, police security, TM machine, money exchange, Real clothes stores, and many facilities lodges and hotels.

After Namche bazaar, your next staying will be in Tyangbuche which is popular buddies historical place where you can see the biggest monastery of Nepal located at 3,890 m elevation, probably the biggest monastery located in a high altitude area in the world. It is built in 1916AD.

There are many Buddhist Chhortains, prayer flags, Stupas, Mani walls, Buddhist Flags and many monuments you going to pass and feel really tranquility and peace.

After Tyangbuche toward Everest Base Camp and Gokyo, you going to see so many high mountains from each and every corner especially Mt. Everest(8,848 m), Mt. Lhotse (8516 m), Mt Ama Dabla m (6812 m), Island peak(6179 m), Mt. Makalu(8481 m) and other so many mountains. Following the trail of Everest base camp, you will pass Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, and Gokyo through Chola pass Each day you will have unbelievable views of mountains, landscapes, and pleasant trails.

Everest base camp and Gokyo trek via Chola pass is an adventure trekking trail as it is a beautiful area trek no doubt but this trek entirely depends upon the choice of trekkers and best season which is from Sep to Nov and Feb to June, it is also known as an Autumn and spring season is the best for weather and temperature to make this lovely trek.

Your health and mentality are also the key factors that will determine you can make it or not but you should be positive and simply;y physically fit than you can make it.

Everest base camp and Gokyo trek Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (Capital city of Nepal). (1350m)

Day 02: Trekking preparation day and free day around City.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860m) Then trek to Phakding. (2660 m)

Day 04: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar. (3450 m)

Day 05: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar.

Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3890 m).

Day 07: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4410 m)

Day 08: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4910 m).

Day 09: Trek from Lobuche to Ghorakshep (5180 m). Trek to Everest Base camp 5,364m (17,600 ft) and down to Gorakshep in the same day.

Day 10: Trek from Gorak Shep to Kalapathar (5,545 m). Trek down to Dzongla(4,810 m)

Day 11: Trek from Dzongla to Dragnak (4700 m) via Chola pass(5,420 m)

Day 12: Trek from Dragnak to Gokyo (4,750 m)

Day 13: Trek from Gokyo to Dole(4,110 m)

Day 14: Trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar(3450 m)

Day 15: Namche to Lukla(2,860 m).

Day 16: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu(1,350 m)

Day 17: Leisure day in Kathmandu.

Toilets and bathroom faculties during Everest base camp trekking:

Toilet during EBC trek

Trekking in the highland of Nepal, there will be very basic toilet and bathrooms as it is a remote area where is difficult to supply all infrastructures materials.

There are 3 different types of toilets during Everest base camp trek, Western-style toilet, sitting toilet, and Sherpa toilet (wooden made toilet have a big hole in the middle of the toilet)

The toilet facilities below Namche Bazaar (3450 m) is relatively better because there are so many nice latest buildings with western style toiletries and Squat toilets both on the choice you can use them but above Namche bazaar, only a few lodges got western-style toilet otherwise mainly you will get squat toilet during this trek.

About Rooms:

Tea House Accommodation during the trek

The Rooms will be twin basis while you are in the EBC trek. As you know the Everest base camp in a remote part of Nepal therefore the room will be basic but very clean, good mattress, a wide window, good insulation wooden made room, a private locker, small tea table in the room. Many Lodges do not provide a blanket in the room but at your request, before you go to bed, the hotel owner will give it as it is a kind of system.

In the mountain, while you are on trek you should take all toiletries such as toilet paper, towel, shop, shampoo, etc.

In the room generally, there will be two-bed contains a bedsheet, pillow, mattress, window cotton, tea table, you may also get a small chair, basic carpet on the floor.

At night when you are sleeping is better to use your own key locker which is more reliable because we never know, but noted that mostly during the tea house trekking is safe in Nepal.

Useful information for Everest base camp and Gokyo trekking:

  • If you are photographer or you have big camera than we suggest you to take your own power bank because In EBC & Gokyo trek not everywhere is electricity, however you can charge your electric devices for it cost money per hour about $3 US
  • Bathrooms are sharing for all trekkers so, if you are taking cold shower that is free but gas or solar hot shower need to paid cost about $3.5 to $ 5US. Generally lower part of the trek cost low and higher part of the trek cost higher for almost everything including foods.
  • WiFi services are quite facilitated almost every tea house since few years but most of them does not repair on time that is why you better to take your own local sim card –NCELL is recommended, as it provides the fast internet service while you are in Everest region trek, to buy sim card you just need to get your passport copy, one pp size photo graph and about $3 US To buy, and takes 10 minute, it is available almost every small store in Kathmandu. In case if you forgot to buy in Kathmandu no worries you can buy them in Lukla and Namche Bazaar but they charge little more than city.
  • If you want to be connected while on the trail then you can purchase a prepaid Data SIM Card. Ncell offers a high-speed 3G internet services for the Everest region. SIM cards are cheap and available in many stores in Kathmandu. Besides this, the tea houses on the EBC trail also provide internet facilities for a surcharge of around $3-$5 per hour.
  • Almost every tea house during this trek you will not have your own charging plug as they have only specific place to charge, generally they have charging sharing port near the Cash counter.
  • When you are charging your phone , you should take care your self because in high season there will be so many people in tea house so you may lost your phone.
  • Make sure you have enough cash with you for this trek, you can get ATM machine at Namche but some time may not work. Your cash will be exchange at Namche and Lukla but the rate will be low compare to city, so exchange your required cash in Kathmandu.
  • If you have sensitive skin or any skin disease than take your own bed sheet for the trek,
  • As per the rules and regulation from Everest region trek , you should eat at the lodge where you are sleeping otherwise you have to pay penalty above $20 US, per person.
